Strategies to improve metacognition of the comprehension process.  Useful tools for addressing before, during and after reading activities with awareness of the comprehension process.  Teacher preparation ideas including a practicum on effective comprehension guidelines, questioning and summary of the materials, both narrative and expository.  The afternoon session includes concrete multisensory introductions for 27 different comprehension skills.

A vocabulary workshop that provides instruction in Greek and Latin roots useful for students’ acquisitions and ways to commit these concepts to long term memory.  It will also include ideas for creating necessary lists of academic vocabulary terms students should have and specific games and activities to internalize the vocabulary terms in different subject areas. Discussion on vocabulary research and the importance of vocabulary to comprehension will also be discussed.  This workshop will include hands on activities for the introduction of Greek and Latin roots.

Concrete Multisensory Instruction of Grammar – 1:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M.

Empower students to manipulate, control, master and use all areas of spoken and written language more effectively. Participants will receive a complete set of 5 lesson plans for each concept introductioned for the parts of speech. Writing it UP! Providing Clarity Regarding Dyslexia and Dysgraphia with the Evaluation Report – 8:30 A.M. – 3:30 P.M.

This workshop is designed for all professionals who evaluate for dyslexia and/or dysgraphia that would like a better understanding of how to interpret and articulate the results of normative testing and informal data within an evaluation report. The training will encourage and enhance professional judgment in the identification process by working through the definition of dyslexia according to the current Texas Dyslexia Handbook. This workshop will be led by a practicing Nationally Certified Educational Diagnostician with years of experience in assessing and identifying students with dyslexia.  The training is intended to guide evaluation professionals in their efforts to properly identify students with dyslexia using standardized assessments results, information from the classroom, and the student’s educational history and background.  This workshop will encourage report writing with clarity that informs 504/IEP committees and assists in the development of effective support and programming for the student.
